2,306 square feet is the median new-home-size, in the United States in 2012. This is up eight percent from 2009, at which time new homes had shrunk in size by six percent since the start of the recession. Many industry experts said that this downsizing meant that “the days of the McMansion were over,” but in reality, says regional Lennar president, Jeffry Roos, “it wasn’t that consumers wanted less space; many just couldn’t afford more [square footage]”[1].
