2 million homes that will come on the real estate market as part of the “Great Senior Sell-Off” by the end of 2020, according to University of Utah professor of urban planning Arthur Nelson. Nelson believes that the baby boomer generation, which began reaching the age of 65 in 2011, will begin to “unload their homes in cumulatively higher rates” over the next decade[1]. About 80 percent of seniors are homeowners at age 65, but they begin selling off their homes at a rate of about four percent per year from that point, and 60 percent of that selling population opts to rent rather than purchase a new home.
