Amount of mortgage debt, in dollars, for all U.S. households in the last quarter of 2012. This amount remained virtually unchanged quarter-over-quarter from Q3 to Q4 2012[1]. Mortgage debt makes up the largest component of household debt, but overall consumer debt did increase in the fourth quarter by 0.3 percent quarter-over-quarter. This rise in consumer debt breaks a trend in declining consumer debt that first began in Q4 2008.
